Inspired by the birth of his only child in 1968, Getz wrote and illustrated a series of children's books. His highly colored, spacious watercolor-and-ink illustrations and his gentle, humorous stories were an instant hit among young readers and parents alike.
Among the children's books he illustrated for other authors are: Jennifer's Walk by Anne Carriere, Getz's second wife, Mr. Goat's Bad Good Idea by Marileta Robinson, and Gator & Mary's Traveling Band by David Martin.
